Mercer Teams Advance, Grundy R-5 Does Not

The Milan Tournament kicked off Monday night and both the Mercer and Grundy R-5 teams were in first round action. It was a good night for Mercer as both teams advanced into the tournament semifinals, the boys doing so with a 57-48 win over Linn County.
Grundy R-5 went the other direction, heading to the consolation semifinals after first-round losses. The Lady Panthers fell to Mercer 71-16 and the Grundy boys lost 82-27 to top-seeded Novinger.

Mercer vs. Grundy Girls
The Mercer girls didn’t waste any time establishing complete control over the eighth-seeded Lady Panthers, running out to a 26-2 first quarter lead and pulling away throughout the night.
Sierra Michaelis led the Lady Cardinals with 35 points while Courtney Owens added 18 and Hayley Sample scored eight. Mercer improved to 11-0 with the win. Mercer will be in semifinal action on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m.
The Grundy girls fell to 0-8 on the season with the loss. Shelbi Stimpson scored eight points to pace the Lady Panthers, who will play in the consolation semifinals on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Mercer Boys
The Mercer boys continued their hot streak, winning their eighth game in a row, this time defeating Linn County in the opening round of the Milan Tournament. The Cardinals overcame a poor free throw shooting performance, where they hit just 6-of-15 from the charity stripe, to advance to the semifinals.
Colton Hartley scored 33 points to lead the Cardinals, who moved to 8-2 on the season. Trey Michaelis added 11 points. The Mercer boys will play in the semifinals on Wednesday at 5:50 p.m.
Grundy Boys
The Grundy boys fell to top-seeded Novinger and dropped to 0-8 on the season.
Destin Gann had 11 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Panthers. Grundy will be in consolation semifinal action on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
