Verla Berniece McCarty, a 78-year-old resident of Corydon, IA, died on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011 at the Corydon Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Lineville, IA, with Brother Wilburn Bennett officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Lineville.
Open visitation is underway at the funeral home where the family visitation will be from 7 to 8 o’clock this evening (Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012).
Mrs. McCarty was born on Feb. 1, 1933 near Brimson, the daughter of Raymond Jay and Mildred Faye Hobbs Gibson. She attended schools in Harrison and Grundy counties. She started farming at an early age when she and her brother rented land and farmed with their father. She was married on Dec. 28, 1956 to James Duane “Jimmie” McCarty, who survives her of the home. After her marriage, she played an active role in farming with her husband and sons. The couple lived all their married life in Wayne County. They purchased a farm in 1972 south of Clio, Iowa, where they lived for 25 years, raising beef cattle and feeder pigs. In 1997 they bought a home in Lineville and retired from farming due to health.
She was a long time member of the Lineville Assembly of God Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, James Keith McCarty and wife, Marianne of Allerton, IA and Darrell Duane McCarty of Lineville; two grandchildren, Michele McCarty, of Des Moines, IA and Aaron McCarty and wife, Emily of Madrid, IA; one step-grandson, Shanon Blackwell of Allerton; two great-granddaughters; one step-great-grandson; five brothers, Mervin Gibson and wife, Barbara and Lyle Gibson and wife, Alma of Brimson, M.S. Gibson and wife, Gayle and Ken Gibson and his wife, Cora of Trenton and Steve Gibson and wife, Debbie of Leavenworth, KS; six sisters, Marilyn Shackelford, Helen Swank and her husband, Ronny and Charlene Arnold and her husband, Ed of Brimson, Mevelyn Cheshier and her husband, Kenneth of Redfield, AR; Nancy Burkeybile and her husband, Don of Trenton and Becky Ragan and her husband, Jim of Cameron; four brothers-in-law, Max and Rex McCarty, John McCarty and his wife, Jerilee and Bob McCarty and his wife, Linda; a sister-in-law, Arlene Mulvania and her husband, Max; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Wesley Gibson; her father and mother-in-law, Howard and Estel McCarty; and a brother-in-law, Gary McCarty.
