Richmond jumped into passing lanes in the first quarter, forcing turnovers and ran out to a 17-10 first quarter lead, one which was 17-7 until Keegan McGinness nailed a three just seconds before the horn. After nearly outscoring Trenton by 10 points in the first quarter, Richmond did outscore the Bulldogs by 10 in the second quarter, playing a very physical game and out-rebounding the Bulldogs. The Spartans took a 33-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Spartans continued to outplay the Bulldogs in the second half, pulling away with runs of 14-8 in the third quarter and 15-12 in the fourth.
“We struggled to execute against a much more physical team,” Bulldogs’ Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “Our rebounding and execution on offense have to get better. We are all looking forward to another opportunity to prove ourselves on Friday.”
Colby Larson was the only Bulldog to reach double-figures, finishing with 10 points. Austin Taul had six points, three steals and three assists and Wilson Utley added four points. Austin Norris, Brennon Vandevender, Keegan McGinness and Chase Tolson all scored three points each and Seth Acton scored two points.
With the loss, Trenton fell to 3-5 on the season. The loss came a full 12 days after the Bulldogs’ last game, one they won on the road in Gallatin.
Both the Trenton boys and girls teams will be in action once more at NCMC’s Holiday Hoops. Trenton faces Centralia Friday on the final night of the nine-day Holiday Hoops event. Action tips off with the girls game at 4 p.m. and the boys contest will follow at 5:30.
