Lady Bulldogs
The story of the night for the Trenton Lady Bulldogs was the play of junior forward Avery Whitaker. Whitaker racked up a career-high 25 points to keep Trenton ahead in a close contest.
“It was good to see Avery have a bounce back game, at least scoring-wise,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Quentin Albrecht said. “Her defense, rebounding and all those other intangible things have been good all year. The Carrollton game last week was the first time all year she hadn’t scored in double figures, but she had a career-high 25 points on Friday night. One of the big reasons was our guards all found ways to get her the ball in the paint and she was able to convert those opportunities into baskets.”
The Lady Bulldogs were locked in a 10-10 tie after the first quarter, but edged ahead ever so slightly in the second quarter, leading 28-25 at the break. Trenton tacked a single point onto its lead in the third quarter then finished strong, outscoring Gallatin 18-13 over the final eight minutes to take home the nine-point victory.
“Gallatin is probably the most improved team in the area,” Albrecht said. “They’ve had an influx of young talent led by a freshman point guard, Sarah Lin. Our girls played hard, worked hard and had a great defensive game. We had balanced scoring again and because of that we were able to off-set the really good game the Lin girl had.”
Lin finished with 21 points for Gallatin. Behind Whitaker’s performance, Trenton got 12 points from Makaila Capeder and 10 points from Scotlin Hurley, who knocked down three three-pointer in the game. Halie Brewer and Cassidy Cotton each hit a three-pointer as well and rounded out the Lady Bulldogs’ scoring with seven and six points respectively.
The victory was the third in a row for the Lady Bulldogs, who improved to 5-2 on the season. The Trenton girls will be back on the court on Wednesday when they take on Schuyler County at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton at 7 p.m. as part of North Central Missouri College’s Holiday Hoops.
Bulldogs
The Trenton boys avenged an earlier loss to Gallatin in the Gallatin Tournament with a 58-43 win. Trenton jumped out with a 14-4 lead in the first quarter and led wire-to-wire on their way to their third win of the season.
A big reason for the turn around was the play of Colby Larson and Keegan McGinness. McGinness scored 21 points to go with three steals and Larson had 20 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Austin Taul added seven points for the Bulldogs and had three assists as well. Trenton also got four points from Brennon Vandevender, three from Austin Norris and three points, four assists and three steals from Chase Tolson.
“Earlier in the year when we played them we didn’t really rebound and this game we were able to box guys out,” Taul said. “Colby got aggressive offensively and it opened up a lot of looks for Keegan.”
With the win, Trenton improved to 3-4 on the season. The Bulldogs will be back on the floor on Wednesday, Dec. 28. Trenton will play Richmond at the Ketcham Community Center as part of North Central Missouri College’s Holiday Hoops event.
