Neither Grundy R-5 High School basketball team could avoid an 0-2 start to the 2011-2012 season on Thursday night as both the Lady Panthers and Panthers lost on the road in Green City. The Grundy girls fell, 58-23, while the Grundy boys were defeated, 69-44.

Lady Panthers
The Lady Panthers trailed just 11-6 after a quarter of play, but Green City went on a 21-6 run in the second quarter putting Grundy down 32-12 at the break. Green City continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring the Lady Panthers in both the third and fourth quarters.
Shelbi Stimpson led the Lady Panthers with 11 points and Katie Coin and Marina Munday each scored four points.
The Grundy girls return to action Saturday in the HDC Conference Tournament on their home floor in Galt. Grundy takes on North Harrison in first-round action at 6 p.m.
Panthers
The Grundy boys were hanging right with Green City until the second quarter when the Gophers went on a 27-6 run. Following the rugged second quarter, Grundy re-grouped in the locker room at halftime and finished strong playing right with the home team. Unfortunately, the damage done in the second quarter was irreversible and the Panthers fell, 69-44.
“Other than the second quarter, where too many turnovers resulted in easy transition points for Green City, the boys played pretty well on both ends of the court,” Panthers’ Head Coach Les Jackson said.
Stuart Eller had 14 points and six rebounds to pace the Panthers while Clayton Radcliff scored 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Destin Gann chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds. Jordin Curtis had six points, Mason Larson scored four and Brody Hatcher finished with six steals and three assists.
The Panthers will be back in action in the HDC Conference Tournament in Galt on Saturday, taking on Mercer in the opening round at 7:30 p.m.
