Lady Pirates
The North Central women worked their way out to a six-point lead in the first half, but appeared to come out flat to start the second half. Southwestern took full advantage and quickly turned a six-point deficit into a six-point lead. The Lady Pirates were not done, however, battling back to tie the game with less than a minute to go. The Lady Pirates would have an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but the shot rimmed out and the game went to overtime. In the overtime period, the Lady Pirates did just enough to take the win, their fourth in a row.
“We didn’t play well at all,” Lady Pirates’ Head Coach Jenni Croy said. “We missed a ton of shots. It was obvious we hadn’t played in a week.”
Brittany Williams led the Lady Pirates with 16 points and Kayla Hewitt added 10. Amanda Rodenburg had a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Lady Pirates are now 6-4 through the first 10 games of the season.
Pirates
The North Central men trailed early in their match-up and found themselves down 38-24 at the break. The Pirates rallied in the second half, however, and stormed back to take the game by eight.
“It was real similar to the first time we played them this season,” Pirates’ Head Coach Steve Richman said. “We played better, but we weren’t shooting the ball well in the first half and they were. We made some adjustments at halftime and were more patient in the second half.”
The Pirates were led by KaRon Hayes, who had 20 points. Josh Stockman was right behind his fellow Pirates with 19 points, Jacob Hardie added 11 and Tim Nelson finished with 10.
The win moved the Pirates to 4-2 overall on the season.
Both the men and women will be back on the court this weekend as they travel to Beatrice, NE for the Southeast Nebraska Classic. The Lady Pirates and Pirates will play two games each, one on Friday and one on Saturday.
