After a tough first-round loss at the Gallatin Tournament, the Gilman City High School boys basketball team bounced back, scoring its first win of the season with a 77-54 victory over Newtown-Harris in the consolation semifinals on Wednesday. The Gilman City Lady Hawks were not so lucky, however, as they missed their chance to play for a trophy, falling 54-33 to Winston in the girls consolation semifinals.
The Tri-County girls were able to punch a ticket to the consolation final as they defeated Newtown-Harris in a close one, 33-30.

Boys – Gilman vs. Newtown
The Gilman boys held a slim two-point lead following the opening quarter and pushed the advantage to 35-27 by halftime. A 16-7 run by the Hawks in the third quarter all but put away the Tigers. Gilman again outscored the Tigers in a high scoring fourth quarter to capture win number one on the season by 23 points.
Mason Ward again cracked the 20-point barrier for the Hawks, leading the way with 22 points. Brennon Carey added 15 points, Ryan Burrows scored 14 and Corey Rouner was in double figures as well with 12 points. Newtown was led by Micah Busick, who scored 27 points and Adam Crawford finished with 16.
The Hawks, 1-1 on the season, will face Maysville on Friday at 8:15 p.m. in Gallatin with the consolation title on the line. Newtown will play Winston on Friday at 5:45 p.m. in the seventh place game.
Girls – Gilman vs. Winston
The Gilman girls couldn’t overcome a Winston team, which should be one of the better ones in the HDC Conference this year, as the Lady Hawks fell by 21 points. Winston jumped out with a 19-4 run in the first quarter and never looked back, pulling away throughout the game.
Gilman was led by Mikayla Toombs, who scored 13 points. Saige Johnson added 12.
The Lady Hawks, now 0-2, will look to score their first win on Friday when they take on Newtown-Harris in the seventh-place game at 4:30 p.m.
Girls – Tri-County vs. Newtown
The Tri-County girls were able to slip past the Lady Tigers of Newtown-Harris, who were playing without leading scorer Tara Colling, who went down with a knee injury in the season opener.
In a low-scoring defensive contest, Tri-County established a 19-16 lead in the first half and made it last through the second for their first win of the season.
“We did a really good job sharing and passing the ball offensively,” Lady Mustangs’ Coach Chad Sullenger said. “Keying on (Mercedes) Foster and trying to hold her down was our goal defensively and we did just a good enough job to get it done.”
Madison Huston led Tri-County with 14 points and Brianna Hixson scored 13. For Newtown it was Foster leading the way with a game-high 17 points.
The 1-1 Lady Mustangs will face Winston for the girls consolation title on Friday at 7 p.m., while the 0-2 Lady Tigers play Gilman for seventh place at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
