Nov 14, 2011 | Basketball, Sports & Recreation

The North Central Missouri College Lady Pirates got a double dose of Iowa community colleges over the weekend as they hosted and defeated Southwestern Community College at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton on Friday night, 60-49, but traveled to Keokuk, IA on Sunday and fell 89-56 to Southeast Community College.

vs. Southwestern
The Lady Pirates got their weekend started off on the right foot, blasting the Lady Spartans of Southwestern Community College. North Central used a big first half, outscoring the visitors 40-25 to put the game in hand. The Lady Pirates didn’t do too much in the second half, coasting to the finish and allowing Southwestern to close the gap to 11 points by the end of the contest.
“I was pleased with the ‘W’ and I thought we played a pretty good first half,” Lady Pirates’ Head Coach Jenni Croy said. “We had discussed Brittany (Williams) stepping up her game a little bit and I thought she did that. In the second half we came out a little flat, which is easy to do when you are up 15 at half. Whitney Bennett was able to hit a couple of shots and Mysti Williams had a big three-point play under the basket and that kind of gave us the spark we needed in that second half. We were able to maintain the lead and come up with the win and that is what is important to us right now.”
Brittany Williams led all scorers, recording 16 points, all of which came in the first half. Mysti Williams added 10 points, Kelsey Griffin had nine and Bennett finished with seven.
vs. Southeast
The Lady Pirates were unable to keep the momentum going when they went on the road Sunday as they ran into a buzzsaw in Southeast Community College.
In a role reversal from Friday night, the Lady Pirates trailed by 15 at halftime, but rallied in the second half. North Central cut the lead to eight, but Southeast caught fire from that moment and began to pull away the rest of the game.
“Southeast has a very balanced scoring attack,” Croy said. “Their 1-3-1 zone gave us fits in the second half. We turned the ball over too many times and against good teams you can’t do that and expect to win.”
Alexis Goodwin led the Lady Pirates in the loss with 12 points and nine rebounds. Amanda Rodenberg added 10 points and nine rebounds and Brittany Williams finished with nine points and 11 rebounds.
With the split over the weekend, the Lady Pirates’ record moved to 3-4 on the season. The Lady Pirates get back to the court on Thursday as they play host to the Graceland University junior varsity in a women’s-only match-up at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
