R-5 Boys Top Newtown, Girls Fall To Lady Cards

The Grundy R-5 Junior High School basketball teams were back in action at the Mercer Tournament on Tuesday night. The boys were able to avenge an opening night loss to Mercer with a 39-20 win over Newtown-Harris. The Lady Panthers ran into a buzz saw in the Mercer Lady Cardinals, falling 46-10.

Lady Panthers
The Grundy girls played perhaps the best team in the tournament in Mercer and suffered the consequences. Mercer ran out to a 23-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way for the 36-point win.
Leading the way for the Grundy girls in the loss was Rebecca McLain, who had four points. Shelby Bummer, Jodi Dickerson and Brooke McDonald all scored two points each for the Lady Panthers, who are now 1-8 on the season. The Lady Panthers will wrap up tournament play in Mercer on Friday, facing Cainsville.
Panthers
The Grundy boys wound up on the winning side in their game, defeating rival Newtown-Harris. The Panthers used a 14-2 first quarter run to establish a big lead and stretched the advantage with an 11-6 run in the second quarter. In the second half, Grundy coasted to the wire, winning by 19 points.
Mason Radcliff had 10 points to lead the Panthers, who also got seven points and seven assists from Alex Webb and six points each from Mason Alley and Tanner Hudson. John Piodos and Richard Flick each scored four points and Jesse Benedict scored two points.
The win moved the Panthers to 6-3 on the season. The Grundy boys will be back on the court on Friday as they wrap up play in the Mercer Tournament.
