The Grundy R-5 Junior High School basketball teams were in consolation action Friday night at the Tri-County Tournament in Jamesport. The Panthers picked up a 45-21 win over Gilman City to bring home some hardware. But the Lady Panthers were not as fortunate, falling 32-11 to rival Newtown-Harris.
R-5 Junior High Teams Split Consolation Games
The Grundy boys came out strong in their bid for a consolation crown, jumping out to a 9-5 first quarter lead, but it was the Panthers’ 22-5 run in the second quarter that broke the game open. Grundy was able to coast through the second half, cruising to the 24-point victory.
John Piodos led the Panthers with 14 points and Mason Radcliff added 13 points. Mason Alley and Tanner Hudson each scored seven points while Isaac Chamberlain pulled down eight rebounds and Alex Webb collected six rebounds.
With the win, the Grundy boys improved to 5-2 on the season.
The Lady Panthers fell behind after Newtown used runs of 10-2 in the first quarter and 10-4 in the second to grab control of the contest. There was no coming back in the second half for the Lady Panthers as Newtown pulled away for the victory.
Leading the way for the Lady Panthers were Emily Kenley, who scored six points, and Jodi Dickerson, who finished with four points.
The loss dropped the Lady Panthers to 1-6 on the season. Both Grundy teams return to action tonight in the opening round of the Mercer Tournament in Mercer. The Grundy boys will face the host school, Mercer, while the Lady Panthers take on Cainsville.
