Lawson struck first in the game, scoring on a 30-yard run by Joseph Jones. A missed extra point kept the lead to just six points, however. Trenton had one chance to tie the game at the end of the half, driving down inside the 10-yard line, but on fourth and goal, Lawson intercepted a pass in the end zone to keep its 6-0 lead intact going into the break.
Lawson started the second half much like they did in the first half, driving down for a score, but missing on the PAT attempt. In the fourth quarter, Trenton got a spark from Dakota Schultz, who intercepted a pass. After two big offensive gains, however, a fumble killed the Bulldogs’ momentum.
Trenton hung around, however, and when Lawson fumbled, Trenton cashed in. Quarterback Chris Kurtz hit Charlie Hoffman with a pass that got the Bulldogs down to the one-yard line with under a minute to go in the game. Chanse Houghton ran the ball in for Trenton’s first score of the game with 24 seconds showing on the clock. Mason Mounce ran in the two-point conversion, but Trenton’s ensuing on-side kick attempt didn’t travel the necessary 10 yards, giving Lawson the ball, and the win.
Trenton will look to avenge the JV loss on Monday when both the junior varsity and freshman teams host Lexington at C.F. Russell Stadium. Kick off is set for 5 p.m.
