Dr. J.A. Keuhn, D.O., has spent his adult life caring for people living in and around his hometown of Trenton.
NCMC To Honor Local Physician
Dr. Keuhn grew up in Trenton and graduated from Trenton High School in 1965. He graduated first in his class in 1967 from Trenton Junior College and transferred to what is now Truman State University in Kirksville, graduating in 1971. He was accepted into medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, but the U.S. Army had other plans.
After serving in the Army for two years as a sergeant and radio man during the Vietnam War, Dr. Keuhn followed his dream and attended medical school to become a physician. He graduated from medical school in 1976, completed his residency in family medicine at Suncoast Hospital in Largo, FL, in 1977 and returned to Trenton to set up a private medical practice.
Dr. Keuhn currently is the emergency room physician for Wright Memorial Hospital in Trenton and serves on the Wright Memorial Hospital Foundation and Advisory boards. He also is the medical director for Sunnyview Nursing Home in Trenton.
Dr. Keuhn’s dedication to his hometown and his many accomplishments in the medical field and as a humanitarian will be recognized next month. He is one of five people selected to the 2011 Class of Distinguished Alumni of Trenton Junior College/North Central Missouri College. The honorees will be formally recognized at the eighth annual college gala.
If continued service to northwest Missouri communities isn’t enough, Dr. Keuhn has traveled to Haiti to provide free medical care to that struggling country for the last dozen years.
Dr. Keuhn began visiting Haiti in 1999, where he founded a free medical clinic. He returns to Haiti at least four times a year, treating 400 to 500 patients and performing 50 to 75 surgeries. In addition to providing medical care, he works with the School of Excellence, which has increased from 35 students to more than 600. The school provides an education, food, clean drinking water and restroom facilities to its students. Dr. Keuhn’s wife, Chris, a nurse, often joins his medical mission trips to Haiti. Their work has prompted others to give of their time, talents and money to Haiti through the His Way charity ministry.
The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons named Dr. Keuhn its 2010 Physician of the Year. This prestigious award is not given every year and has been given to only 25 physicians in Missouri. In 2009, he was honored as the Missouri EMS Physician of the Year and as the Volunteer Physician of the Year for the Saint Luke’s Health System.
Throughout his career, Dr. Keuhn has been a mentor and teacher to others in the medical profession. We are fortunate this successful professional brought his calm demeanor, caring attitude and medical skills home to treat the mind, body and spirit of his patients.
Dr. J.A. Keuhn of Trenton is one of five distinguished alumni to be honored Oct. 8 at the North Central Missouri College Foundation’s annual gala. The other honorees are John R. Bain, Mary Jo Hoffman, Ed Holt and Marvin Sharp. Reservations for the gala are being accepted at the NCMC Development Office.
