For the first time in the history of the program, the Trenton High School softball team is off to a 15-0 start. The Lady Bulldogs surpassed the mark of 14-straight wins to open a season set by the 2009 team on Monday night with a 5-1 victory over Putnam County.

Trenton had defeated Putnam County 8-0 on Saturday in the opening game of the North Central Missouri College Nan Carter Classic on the same field. While the win wasn’t as smooth on Monday night, the end result was still a Trenton victory.
“Tonight was a real good opportunity for a trap game,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Steve Richman said. “You come off a high of beating Kirksville in the Nan Carter championship and you beat this team 8-0 that same day, it would have been real easy to have a letdown tonight. Our kids handled that situation pretty good, though.”
The game was tied at 1-1 early, but the Lady Bulldogs broke through in the middle innings, taking the lead and pulling away for the four-run victory.
Maddie Hooyman went 2-for-2 at the top of the lineup and stole a base for the Lady Bulldogs. Chanel Pash provided the power for the Lady Bulldogs, going 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and two RBIs. Kate Lowrey was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and Makaila Capeder finished 1-for-3 at the plate.
“Hitting-wise, we went from one extreme to another with pitching speed,” Richman said. “We saw a little bit slower pitcher tonight and it took us a couple of innings to get her figured out. I am real proud of this team, though, because it could have been a disaster. We got past that trap game, though, and we will move on and play Tuesday night.”
On the hill, Trenton’s Chanel Pash and Scotlin Hurley combined to hold the Lady Midgets to just one run on five hits. Pash threw the opening four frames, allowing one run on two hits and a walk, while striking out four. Hurley, pitching against her former teammates, threw three innings, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one.
The 15-0 Lady Bulldogs are in action tonight in Lexington, playing a doubleheader with the Minutewomen. The first game will be a make-up game for the Lexington Tournament championship, which was rained out on Sept. 10. Game two will be the regular-season meeting between the two squads. First pitch for the first game will be thrown at 5 p.m.

The Trenton JV won as well against Putnam County Monday night. The game went into an extra inning before Trenton pulled out the 4-3 victory, scoring their last two runs of the game on overthrows by the Putnam County defense.
McKinley Hurley went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Megan Lynch had a hit and an RBI for the Lady Bulldogs’ JV. Hurley threw the first three innings on the hill, allowing two un-earned runs on no hits and struck out five. Mallory Hooyman threw the final three innings, allowing one run and striking out four for the JV, now 7-2 on the season.
