In the first set, Trenton jumped out to a 6-2 lead and forced Braymer into a timeout after a run to go up 12-5. The Lady Bobcats battled back and tied the game at 14 before the two teams traded blows until they stood tied at 20-20. Braymer had more left in the tank, however, closing strong to take game one, 25-21.
Game two was similar as Trenton ran out to an 11-6 lead. Bekah Wiggins scored with a big block and Braymer used another timeout as the crowd came to life. Trenton led 13-7 at the time, but that advantage would vaporize quickly. Braymer again battled back and tied the game at 15-15. Trenton hung around and had the game tied at 20-20 again, but just as it was in the first game, Braymer controlled the final volleys, winning by four points again and taking the match with the second victory.
Gwen Delp tallied 20 digs to lead the Lady Bulldogs and Kate Ewald finished with four assists. Katie Ireland had three aces and Kelsey Scott had a team-high two blocks. Ewald, Ireland, Wiggins and Holly Doolin all finished with one kill each.
The loss dropped the Trenton volleyball team to 0-4 on the season.
The junior varsity, however, improved to 2-1 on the season with a 25-23, 25-23 victory over the Braymer JV. Haley Mathews led the way with 24 digs, four kills and three aces. Alyssa Shultz and Shanna Nichols also reached double-digit totals in digs in the JV contest. Malinda Foster added a team-high four assists.
Both the JV and varsity will be back on the court tonight in St. Joseph as the Lady Bulldogs face off with the Lafayette Lady Irish. First serve is set for 5 o’clock.
