Jim Cox, a 59-year-old resident of Plains, KS, died on Sunday morning, Sept. 11, 2011, in rural Ford County, KS.

Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Plains. Holy Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, at the church. Interment will follow in the Plains Cemetery at Plains.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary in Meade, KS and from 6 until service time on Wednesday at the church.
Mr. Cox was born on Oct. 10, 1951, in Meade, the son of James Paul and Mary D. Eakes Cox. He attended the St. Patrick’s Parochial School and graduated from Southwestern Heights High School in 1969.
He was married on Sept. 13, 1969 in Plains to Karliss Jean Bond. After their marriage the couple made their home in Plains. He later began his career with Panhandle Eastern Pipeline. In 1971, the couple moved to Elkhart, KS until 1978, when they returned to Plains and made their home. In 1982, they became owners of the Plains Tavern and are still active in the operations.
Mr. Cox was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, National Rifle Association, and was a former president of the Artisian Valley Sports Club, Inc. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working with livestock and spending time with his family and friends, particularly his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Karliss, of Plains; three sons, Troy Cox and his wife, Dionne of Hutchinson, KS, Darin Cox and his wife, Maria of Plains and Brian Cox and his wife, Monica of Plains; his mother and step-father, Mary and Leonard Friesen of Plains; two brothers, Mike Cox and his wife, Vicki of McPherson, KS and Rick Cox of Wichita, KS; two sisters, Carolyn Wilcox and her husband, Ron of Sublette, KS and Marilyn Labra and her husband, Bruno of Colwich, KS; and nine grandchildren, Tyler, Spencer, Ryen, Logan, Brayden, Kyler, Alyssa, Aaron and Melanie.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Paul Cox in October 1963.
The family would welcome memorials to the OK Kids Day or the Friends of the Meade State Lake in care of the funeral home.
