The Grundy girls trailed 5-2 after the first three innings, but put up back-to-back two spots in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game at 6-6 heading into the sixth and final inning. The Lady Panthers scored a run to take a 7-6 lead, but Cainsville took advantage of being the home team, plating two runs in the final at bat of the game.
“The girls battled back throughout the game, but we could not overcome the 13 walks that we issued,” Lady Panthers’ Head Coach Curtis May said.
Katie Coin took the loss on the hill, going the distance. Shelbi Stimpson and Marina Munday each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Grundy R-5 offense.
With the loss, the Lady Panthers fell to 1-2 on the season
Panthers
The Grundy boys jumped out with a four-run first inning, but Cainsville answered with five in the bottom of the frame. Grundy added four more in the second and went to the third inning tied at 8-8. Grundy used three runs in the third and one in the fourth to take a 12-10 lead going into the bottom of the fourth, which would be the final inning due to the time limit. Cainsville rallied, posting three runs for the 13-12 win.
Grundy committed seven errors in the game and left the bases loaded in each of the first three frames.
“It was a disappointing loss,” Panthers’ Head Coach Les Jackson said. “Errors and missed opportunities on offense hurt us all night.”
Destin Gann went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Panthers’ offense. Tanner Hudson was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and Stuart Eller went 2-for-3 with a triple and a double. Clayton Radcliff scored three times, going 1-for-2 at the plate.
The loss dropped the Grundy boys to 1-2 on the season.
Both Grundy teams will be back on the diamond tonight, weather permitting, facing Winston on the road. The HDC Conference doubleheader begins at 5:30 p.m. with the girls game.
