The Trenton Lady Bulldogs shrugged off their season-opening loss, bouncing back with a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Lafayette on Thursday afternoon at the THS tennis courts.
Trenton Netters Even Record With Victory
After splitting singles matches 3-3, Lafayette took the first doubles match and needed just one win to take the dual. Haley Creason and Megan Derry scored an 8-2 win in their doubles match-up to tie the dual, but things appeared bleak for the Lady Bulldogs as Kaylee Lickteig and Alexis Whitney trailed 7-2 in the number-two doubles match. With the dual on the line, the seniors rallied to win seven games in a row and take the match 9-7 and the dual 5-4.
“We were tied after singles play at 3-3 and the girls knew we needed to win two out of three doubles matches to pull out a win,” Lady Bulldogs’ Coach Tammy Ockenfels said. “Haley and Megan won their doubles match quickly. Kaylee and Alexis got down 2-7, then won seven games in a row, winning their match 9-7 and ensuring our first win of the season.”
Trenton lost the number-one doubles match as the duo of Maria Stevenson and Megan Sole fell 8-4.
Singles action saw Trenton draw a split as Stevenson won 8-2, Creason won 8-3 and Derry won 8-1. Sole and Whitney each fell 8-3 and Lickteig fell 8-6.
The win boosted the Lady Bulldogs to 1-1 on the season. The THS netters return to action on Thursday as they play host to Savannah at the THS tennis courts at 4 p.m.
Junior Varsity
Trenton took all three JV matches at the dual moving to 1-1 on the year as well.
Mercedes Williams and Morgan Brown each won their singles matches by a score of 6-1 and combined for a 6-3 doubles win.
