Softball Team Gets Win No. 2

Aug 24, 2011 | Softball, Sports & Recreation

Scoring runs early in ballgames has proven to be a struggle for the Trenton Lady Bulldogs softball team early in the season. Fortunately, scoring runs over the course of a seven-inning game has been no problem at all.

Tuesday night in Carrollton the Lady Bulldogs scored seven runs in the final two innings to pick up their second shutout victory in as many games, winning this one 7-0.
Trenton’s pitching was again dominant as Chanel Pash threw another six innings of scoreless softball and Scotlin Hurley again blanked the competition in the seventh. Pash picked up the win, striking out six in as many innings and allowing just one hit. Hurley didn’t record a strikeout, but allowed just one hit in a shut-out inning that capped the victory.
The defense behind the duo was spectacular all night long, catching the eye of Head Coach Steve Richman.
“Defensively we all played pretty well,” Richman said. “We only had six strikeouts, so somewhere in there we had 15 put outs in the game. We played above and beyond defensively.”
Offensively, Trenton again took its time to put runs on the board. After five innings the two squads were deadlocked in a 0-0 tie. Trenton finally broke through in the sixth and did so in a big way. Trenton tagged the Carrollton defense for five runs and added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Avery Whitaker and Hurley each led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a triple. Makaila Capeder and Chanel Pash each went 1-for-3 and Maddie Hooyman was 1-for-4.
“It took us some time to figure things out offensively,” Richman said. “We got to hitting pretty well later, though.”
The win moved the Lady Bulldogs to 2-0 on the season, with Pash going to 2-0 on the hill as well. The Lady Bulldogs will look to make it three in a row on Thursday as they face Princeton at home on Griffin Field in Trenton. The first pitch for the contest is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Junior Varsity
The Trenton junior varsity got into the win column with a 10-1 victory over Carrollton.
McKinley Hurley led the offense with two hits and two runs scored. Katey Halstead had two hits and drove in two runs and Tosha Wilson added a hit and scored twice. On the hill, Mallory Hooyman picked up the win, allowing just one run on three hits to go with four strikeouts.
The JV, now 1-1 in 2011, returns to the diamond as well on Thursday night, facing Princeton after the varsity match-up.
