Virgil and Susanne Walden are charter members of the current Trenton T-Squares Dance Club. In September of 1985, according to an article in the Republican-Times, Larry Liebig, a square dance caller, would be offering square dance lessons in the Rock Barn in Trenton. Four other couples joined the group.
The couples soon began to travel to dances in the area. By June 1986 the club was officially organized and Virgil assumed duties of vice president. The Trenton T-Squares hosted their first dance in September 1986 in the S.M. Rissler School multipurpose room.
The Waldens were presidents in 1988 and 1989. They served as delegates to the west central district for several years. Susanne has served as club secretary and correspondent for the “DOIN’S” official publication of the Missouri Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs, Inc. for many of the 26 years.
In January of 1989 the club had 55 members. Today there are 25 members.
Square dancing is an enjoyable experience for the Waldens. They have made friends across the state at district dances and state festivals. Traveling to national square and round dance festivals in Oklahoma City, St. Paul, Wichita and Memphis were fun times.
The Waldens think square sancing is a wonderful, fun way to exercise and keep an alert mind and meet friendly and common people.
The Trenton T-Squares invite anyone who is interested in learning to square dance to attend three free dances to be held on Sept. 8, 15, and 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wesley United Methodist Church fellowship hall on Washington Street ,where basic instruction in square dancing will be provided. The public is invited to come learn to dance or just watch the fun. Moving your body will keep you fit and young at heart. In no time you will be having more fun than you can imagine.
For couples interested in more advanced square dancing, instructional dances will continue to be held on Thursday evenings throughout the fall months. A small donation to offset the cost of the caller and the hall will be accepted.
