The Phantoms opened the tournament reeling off three straight wins. The Phantoms got off to a solid start with an 8-0 win over the Synergy and they defeated the Midwest Express in game two by another convincing score, this one a 10-1 win. The Phantoms won a closer game in their third match-up, defeating the Sharks 3-0.
The Phantoms’ winning streak was snapped in their fourth game as they fell to the Club Elite Classics, from the Jefferson City/Columbia area, 5-0. The Phantoms dropped to the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament, where they battled back with a 5-2 victory over the Torque.
The win got the Phantoms into the championship against the Club Elite Classics. The Phantoms needed two wins over the Classics, who had yet to lose a game in the tournament. The tournament would go no further, however, as it was cancelled due to extreme heat. The Classics were named state champions and the Phantoms were awarded runner-up.
Earlier in the season the Phantoms placed second in the World Series Tune-Up Tournament and third in both the Father’s Day Classic National Invitational Tournament and the Easter Special Tournament. All three tournaments were played in the Kansas City area.
The Phantoms will now travel to Orlando, FL for USSSA World Series play on July 17 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
