Despite a rainy start on Friday night, the 2011 Gooseberry Festival went off without a hitch with large crowds attending many of the events held throughout the weekend.
Gooseberry Festival Comes To A Close
There were 20 teams entered in the first-ever chili cookoff, sponsored by the Trenton Downtown Improvement Association and the North Central Missouri Children’s Advocacy Center. Both professional and amateur teams took part in the event, with the following winners:
Homestyle, organization – Judges Choice, Sunnyview Nursing Home of Trenton; People’s Choice, Elks Lodge of Trenton; First Place Show, Elks Lodge.
Homestyle, individual – Judges Choice, Sherri Thordarson of Bloomfield, IA; People’s Choice, Masters of Cooking Disaster of Higginsville, head cook Nathan Carman; First Place Show, Hillbilly Chili, head cook Mark Robinson of Trenton.
CASI Judges Choice – 1. Virgil Johnson of Ottumwa, IA; 2. Steve Dowdy of Kansas City; 3. Kevin Stovall of Lee’s Summit; 4. Jerri Dowdy of Kansas City; 5. Sherri Thordarson; 5. Cindy Stovall of Lee’s Summit; 7. Lee Kroenecke of Lenexa, KS; 8. Dave Thordarson of Bloomfield, IA; 9. Shelly Kroenecke of Lenexa, KS: and 10. Jonathan Smith of Trenton. Lee Kroenecke earned enough points to qualify for the national competition by placing in the top 10 of this cookoff.

Winners in horseshoe pitching at Eastside Park were Slade Orndorff, first; Jason Orndorff, second; and Matt Carter, third.
The gooseberry baking contest was held at the Rock Barn. Winners in the various divisions included:

Around 150 persons attended the Trenton Art Guilt art show in the Rock Barn, coming from as far away as North Carolina, Washington, Florida and Idaho.
The most popular picture was “The Three Faces” by Garrett Boyle. Second was a tie between “Queen of Arts” by Garrett Boyle, “Anticipation” by Charlie Crimi, “Artist’s Muse” by Loreen McDonald and “Scarlett O’Hara in Motion” by Kay Martin. There was also a tie for third between “Stargazer II” by Sara Gibson and “Tisk in Guard” by Carolyn Urton.
The most popular artist was Loreen McDonald, edging out Garrett Boyle for second and Carolyn Urton for third.
There were around 300 persons attending the Texaco Country Showdown at the Sesquicentennial Park on Saturday night. The winner was Merritt Whitley of Kansas City, who will advance to the state competition at Clinton in September. The runner-up was Amy Midgyett of Chillicothe.
The Billie Veach Memorial Ranch Rodeo was held at the North Missouri Saddle Club grounds. In the team competition, the winners were Steve Young, David Daniels, Josh Weaver and Tyson Workman of Unionville. The top hand was Steve Young, who also had the top horse. The top team received Veach-made breast collars while Veach-made halters went to the top hand and top horse.
The largest event of the weekend was the annual 5K/10K run/walk, held on Saturday morning at Eastside Park. Rachel Brown of Unionville was the overall winner in the 10K women’s division with a time of 49:54. The 10K men’s winner was Blake Goodin of Princeton with a time of 37:22. The women’s 5K winner was Jessica Westcott of Trenton witha time of 22:55. The men’s 5K winner was Michael Witten of Trenton with a time of 19:17. The youngest walkers were Jena Harris, age 6, and Grady Spillman, age 5. The oldest walkers were Doris Veeder, age 74, and James Maloney, age 73. Traveling the farthest was Katie Roberts of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., who participated in the run for the third year.

Persons who placed in the top three in their age group, but did not receive their medal can stop by the health department before Wednesday of this week or next week to pick it up. Participants who did not receive a shirt or did not get the right shirt size can also stop at the health department to pick one up or exchange sizes. There are a limited number of sizes from small to extra large available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
