Tennis Season Wraps Up In St. Joseph

The Trenton High School boys tennis team was in action one final time, competing in the individual singles and doubles district tournaments in St. Joseph on Thursday. No Bulldogs advanced to the sectional round, ending Trenton’s 2011 tennis campaign.
Trenton did have two shots at a third-place medal as Austin Busch made it to the third-place match in singles play and the duo of Sam Muff and Nathanyl Bankson played for third in the doubles bracket.

Busch received a bye in the opening round and picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win in the quarterfinals. Busch made a run at the championship match in the semifinals, taking the second set 6-2 after droping the opening set, 6-3. In the decisive third set, Busch nearly pulled off the victory, but fell 7-5. Busch was unable to win in the third-place match, falling 8-2, and wound up with a fourth-place finish.
Muff and Bankson scored a 6-2, 6-2 win in the opening round and advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the second round. Muff and Bankson were relegated to the third-place match after falling 6-1, 6-0 in the semis. In the third-place match, Muff and Bankson lost by the same score Busch was defeated in his third-place match, 8-2, and finished fourth.
Also in action for the Bulldogs was Michael Witten and the doubles team of Karson Hill and Isaiah Swann. Witten won his first-round singles match 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, but was eliminated from the tournament in the second round with a 6-0, 6-0 loss.
Hill and Swann saw their day cut short as they were eliminated with a 7-6, 6-3 first-round loss.
