Trenton R-9 District Will Have Summer School
During a meeting of the R-9 Board of Education on Tuesday night, Superintendent Becky Albrecht outlined tentative plans for summer school, which begins on Wednesday, June 1 and will continue through Thursday, June 30. There had been some concern as to whether or not the district would hold summer school this year due to an uncertainty of state funding. However, Mrs. Albrecht said she feels money will be available for the program this year and is going ahead with plans.
Sessions for students in preschool through ninth grade will be held at the S.M. Rissler Elementary School and will include a faculty-based curriculum with administration-influence. Mrs. Albrecht said some individualized instruction will be done as well, although final plans for the program still have to be worked out.
Mrs. Albrecht said the district will provide transportation and has applied for a grant to provide free meals. Enrollment packets are going out this week and the district hopes to have an idea of student numbers within the next few weeks. Mrs. Albrecht said staff recommendations will then be made once it is determined the number needed based on enrollment.
She also noted that information is being secured from students as to interest in having a driver’s education course this summer.

Director of Supportive Services Dennis Gutshall gave an update on construction and said that interior work in the Rissler School addition is around 95 percent complete and that the project should be completed by early this summer, giving staff extra time to get equipment moved and ready for the start of school. The work at the high school is mostly completed, with some cabinet work still to be finished in the FACS room as well as “little things” that Gutshall said are being worked on right now.
Approval was given to several MSBA police updates. Among those specifically outlined were policies regarding corporal punishment, allergy prevention and implementation and use of restraints and seclusion in regard to student discipline.
