Nicole Lin, an exchange student from Taiwan, presented the program at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Kristi Urich was the program chairman.
Exchange Student Gives Rotary Program
Miss Lin is in Trenton through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program and is attending Trenton High School. She currently lives with the Joe and Leah Brinser family, but has also stayed with the Joe and Tina Capeder and Phil and Connie Hoffman families. She has been very busy in the past few months, taking a trip to Florida as well as getting ready to participate in the district Rotary meeting in Kirksville and the International meeting in New Orleans. She had her first paying job, helping with an auction. She will return to her home in Taiwan later this summer.
Mrs. Urich also talked about the University Extension program in Grundy County and the activities it provides. There are 14 specialists serving Grundy County, but who are housed in various counties throughout northwest Missouri. Connie Neal has joined the Grundy County staff as an interior design specialist.
During the business meeting, it was announced the club is starting a “5 for 1” membership program in which current members are divided into teams of five and are to work on finding at least one new member. There are 11 teams in the local club.
The deadline for donations to the club’s Shoes for Orphan Souls project is April 14. New shoes, socks and shoe laces are being accepted by the club, who will then donate them for distribution to orphanages around the world. Linda Kennebeck and Diane Lowrey are the project chairmen and can be contacted for more information. The THS Key Club and TMS Builder’s Club conducted a shoe drive at school and made donations to the club of shoes, socks and money.
The club voted to participate in the citywide cleanup effort the week of April 25 and will be responsible for Main Street, from Ninth to 12th. Elizabeth Gibson reported on the President-Elect workshop she attended recently and reminded club members about the “Every Rotarian Every Year” project in which members are encouraged to donate $100 per year to the Rotary Foundation. The club has already included $60 of that for each member through club dues, resulting in members needing to donate $40 to meet the $100 goal.
Next week’s program chairman is Russell Joiner.
