Saturday saw the Pirates open play against Connors State and suffer a 3-0 loss. NCMC allowed two runs in the bottom of the first, but were lights-out through the fifth before giving up a lone run in the sixth. Offensively, however, North Central never got rolling, recording just two hits in the game. Austin Warren was the losing pitcher for NCMC, falling to 0-2.
Game two saw the Pirates get the bats going, but it was too little, too late. NCMC trailed 6-2 entering the sixth inning, but scored two runs each in the sixth and seventh frames. A two-run spot by Iowa Western in the seventh was the difference, however, as the Pirates fell again. NCMC’s six runs came on four hits and an Iowa Western error. Mitch Seward took the loss and fell to 0-2.
The Pirates’ losses on Sunday were not as close as Connors State picked up victories of 9-0 in game one and 9-2 in game two.
North Central committed four errors and only had two hits in game one as they were blanked on the scoreboard. Drew Mathewson was the losing pitcher for North Central, falling to 0-2 on the season.
Game two was a little better as North Central scored two runs on seven hits and two Connors State errors. The Pirates’ defense came around somewhat, cutting their own errors down to one, but Connors belted 13 hits to produce nine runs and take yet another win over the Pirates. Curtis Hicks took the loss for the Pirates, falling to 0-1.
NCMC will look to get in the win column this weekend as they open Region 16 play against Mineral Area Community College and Jefferson College. The Pirates play Mineral Area on Saturday in Park Hills, beginning at 1 p.m., and Jefferson on Sunday in Hillsboro at noon.
