The Trenton High School basketball team traveled to Unionville on Friday night to do battle with Putnam County in a hoops doubleheader. The Lady Bulldogs were able to hold off Putnam in the girls contest, winning 49-45. The boys, however, could not keep pace as they fell 81-56.

Lady Bulldogs
Scotlin Hurley had a big game in her return to her former school and the Lady Bulldogs were sure glad to have her on their side as she accounted for 15 points in a game decided by four.
Trenton found themselves trailing 14-12 after the first quarter and, after a very defensive second quarter, the two were tied at 18-18 at halftime. Coming out in the third quarter, Trenton took off on a run that would prove to be the difference in the game. The Lady Bulldogs reeled off 21 points in the opening eight minutes of the second half to take a 39-31 lead with one quarter remaining. Putnam County made one final push, but Trenton held off the rally and took the win.
“I thought this game, much like the Marceline game, was kind of a trap game,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Quentin Albrecht said. “It’s a team you have already played, already defeated and now you have to travel to their floor and prove that you can do it again. All-in-all we were able to do that. Putnam came out and did a couple of things early that we had a hard time guarding, but we made an adjustment and got them slowed down.”
Only six Lady Bulldogs made it into the scorebook in the game, with Hurley’s 15 points leading the way. Rebekah Capeder added 11 points, Megan Sole had nine, Lindsey Derry added six, Cassidy Cotton finished with five and Micah Burkeybile scored three.
“We had a lot of girls contribute even though some of them who might normally score a little more didn’t put the ball in the hoop,” Albrecht said. “Scotlin had probably her best game so far for us. She scored nine points in the third quarter when we had 21. She had a steal for a lay-up, she hit a big three for us and it was nice to see her go up to Putnam County where she grew up and have such a nice game on that floor that she is so familiar with. Down the stretch I thought Lindsey Derry really played a great game. She made really good decisions for us and at the end she was able to hit a couple of big free throws that kind of sealed it for us.”
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs improved to 16-5 on the season.
Bulldogs
The Trenton boys were close for a half, but eventually Putnam County’s pace became too much for Trenton to keep up with. The Bulldogs trailed 17-10 after a quarter of play and were only down 35-25 at halftime. In the second half, however, Putnam County began to run away with the game. The Midgets outscored the Bulldogs 19-12 in the third quarter and 27-19 in the fourth as they ran away with the 25-point win.
“Really, the thing that made the biggest difference for us is that we were unable to handle the ball,” Bulldogs’ Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “We turned the ball over 20 times and that is a lot of possessions we are giving the other team. We need to do a better job of executing against the press. We don’t attack nearly enough against the press and that causes us to over-rotate and turn the ball over.”
Keegan McGinness led the way for Trenton with 15 points and three steals. Jacob Meservey gave the Bulldogs a nice performance with eight points and Colby Larson and Brennon Vandevender each scored three points while combining for 10 rebounds.
“Meservey did a great job coming in off the bench and hitting some big shots,” Austin said. “He looked like he was very under control out there. He was the right guy at the right time. Brennon had another good game in a row and Keegan had another good ballgame.”
Trenton also got six points each from Dakota Banks and Austin Norris and four points, two assists and two steals from Seth Acton. Hunter Treadwell added two points and Jeremiah Hamilton had one.
“Seth had a pretty balanced night for us,” Austin said. “He was able to score a little bit for us and played good defense.”
With the loss, the Bulldogs dropped to 6-15 on the season.
Next up for Trenton is a home doubleheader with Cameron on Tuesday. It will be courtwarming for Trenton and action tips off with the girls game at 6 p.m. The boys will follow.
