Girls
The Mercer girls used a 20-7 run in the first quarter to set the tone for their game with the Lady Mustangs. Tri-County was able to put up 40 points in the game, which pleased Lady Mustangs’ Head Coach Susie Vandevender, but still fell a far cry short of the conference leaders.
“I was very proud of the girls performance last night,” Vandevender said. “We played an outstanding offensive game, scoring 40 points. We knew we couldn’t take the shots in the paint, so we drew the defense inside with dribble penetration and passed outside for the three. We actually played pretty good defense too, but just couldn’t keep it out of (Sierra) Michaelis’ hands. Once she gets the ball she goes straight to the hole and it’s very hard to stop her.”
Michaelis had 30 points and Courtney Owens added 19 for Mercer (19-0, 4-0 HDC). Tri-County (3-14, 0-5 HDC) was led by Hannah Sweet, who had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Boys
Mercer ran out to a 33-9 first quarter lead and the Mustangs never recovered. Tri-County outscored Mercer in the following three quarters, but the damage was done as Mercer won by 14 points.
Colton Hartley led Mercer (9-10, 2-2 HDC) with 27 points. Ty Noe added 17 points and Derek Berndt scored 11. Tri-County (9-9, 3-2 HDC) was led by Myles Dustman, who had 30 points and 16 rebounds. Jake Cook added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Mercer will travel to Ridgeway on Friday, while Tri-County hosts Cainsville on Thursday. Both doubleheaders tip off at 6 p.m.
