The Trenton High School freshmen basketball teams traveled to Lathrop to wrap up their seasons on Tuesday night. Both teams closed out the year with victories as the Lady Bulldogs won 36-24 and the Bulldogs won 43-21.
Freshmen Close With Wins
Lady Bulldogs
The Lady Bulldogs found themselves in some trouble early on, trailing 10-6 after the first quarter and 12-6 at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs battled back, however, following up a scoreless second quarter with a strong third quarter that saw Trenton close the gap to 20-19. Trenton owned the final frame, closing the game with a 17-4 run. The strong finish gave the Lady Bulldogs the win and a 5-1 final record.
Makaila Capeder led the way for the freshmen squad, scoring 15 points. Capeder averaged 16.5 points per game in the six freshmen contests this season.
Behind Capeder, the Lady Bulldogs got nine points from Megan Derry, seven from Madi Trump, four from Bekah Wiggins and one from Tosha Wilson.
Bulldogs
The freshmen boys were a little slow out of the gates in their match-up with Lathrop, but still managed to take a 10-7 lead following the opening frame.
“We came out in the first quarter a little slow and without much intensity, which is unusual for us,” freshmen boys Coach Travis Mullenix said. “Fortunately, we were able to snap out of it in the second quarter and played much better from that point on.”
The Bulldogs got their press running to perfection in the second and third quarters and blew the game open. Trenton outscored Lathrop 10-6 in the second quarter and 14-2 in the third. With the game in hand, the Bulldogs coasted through the final quarter of play, taking the 22-point win in the end.
“Our press worked very good and led to a lot of points off turnovers,” Mullenix said. “The boys did a good job of attacking their guards and anticipating the next pass. Chase Tolson, Charlie Hoffman, Chanse Houghton and Isaiah Swann put a lot of pressure on their ballhandlers, which led to those turnovers. Our pressure helps speed things up and we normally play better in a faster paced game.”
Wilson Utley led the Bulldogs with 12 points and eight rebounds. Mason Taylor and Houghton scored eight points each, Swann scored five points and Hoffman had four. Chris Kurtz finished with two points and seven rebounds and Tyler Lynch and Jacob Hamilton each had two points as well. Tolson finished with five assists.
“The win got us to 5-4 on the year,” Mullenix said. “We had a couple of losses that could have gone either way so, overall, I was proud of how we played this season. These boys are a fun group and have a lot of potential. If they keep working hard, they could really do some good things down the road.”
