Rebekah Capeder has done something no Lady Bulldog has ever done before. On Monday night in Lawson, Capeder put up 12 points in a 48-41 loss to the Lady Cardinals, pushing her career total to 1,304 points, the highest total ever produced by a Trenton Lady Bulldog.
Capeder eclipsed the old mark of 1,301 points, held by 1989 THS graduate Lora Gooch, with her 10th of the contest. When considering the names that have came through the school such as Casey Beavers, Amber Vandevender and, of course, Gooch, topping the school’s all-time scoring list is no small feat.
Capeder Breaks School Record, Trenton Falls
“It’s a good feeling,” Capeder said of the accomplishment. “I have had a lot of help along the way. I want to thank my teammates and my coaches, Coach (Quentin) Albrecht and Coach (Casey) Beavers, for helping me along the way. I wouldn’t have been able to score that many points without their help.”
The road to 1,300 points took much different paths for Capeder and Gooch. Both gave the Lady Bulldogs four years, but Gooch did the majority of her damage in her senior season in 1988-1989, scoring 601 points. Capeder has been consistent through a four-year stretch, scoring 230 points as a freshman, 360 as a sophomore, 386 in her junior season and 325 to date in her senior season.
“I never really thought about the record back when I was a freshman,” Capeder said. “We (Capeder and fellow classmate Lindsey Derry) just had to step up and play the best we could and try to help our team out however we could.”
Capeder also holds the school record for rebounds and is the only Lady Bulldog ever to go over 1,000 in that category.
“Rebekah has put in a lot of time, effort and energy to get to this point,” Albrecht said. “Over the course of her career she has gotten better and better. For her to be able to accomplish this feat shows that her hard work and dedication has paid off. The coaches are proud of her, her teammates are proud of her and the school and community are proud of her.”
Unfortunately for the Lady Bulldogs, while Capeder broke the record, Lawson took the game. The two teams battled to a 12-12 tie in the first quarter and at the half it was still anyone’s game, with Lawson leading 22-21. The game stayed close in the second half, but Lawson outscored Trenton by three points in both the third and fourth quarters, giving Trenton its fifth loss of the season.
Free throws proved to be a factor in the game’s outcome as Lawson went 15-for-19 from the line and Trenton was just nine-for-19.
“We were very evenly matched and both teams played hard on both ends of the floor,” Albrecht said. “Their ability to grab offensive rebounds and put backs was a big factor as were the free throws. We were only nine-of-19 on the night and hit just four-of-10 in the fourth quarter, so we had our chances. We just didn’t get the job done.”
Halie Brewer and Scotlin Hurley each added seven points behind Capeder’s team-high 12 and Megan Sole and Micah Burkeybile chipped in five points each. Avery Whitaker scored three points and Cassidy Cotton finished with two points.
The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 14-5 on the season.
Bulldogs
Like the Trenton girls, the Trenton boys also suffered a single-digit loss, falling to Lawson, 72-64.
Lawson jumped out to an 18-12 first quarter lead and held their advantage until halftime, going into the locker room up 35-29. Trenton roared back with a 21-point performance in the third quarter, cutting the Cardinal lead to 53-50 with one quarter left. Lawson was able to hold off the Bulldogs, stretching the lead to eight by the final buzzer.
“We played real hard the whole game,” Bulldogs’ Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “We were under control the whole time, we never got rattled and I am happy with the effort we put out. We made a lot of mistakes, don’t get me wrong, but all-in-all it was a great game for us, especially defensively.”
Colby Larson and Keegan McGinness had big games for the Bulldogs, scoring 20 and 19 points respectively. Dakota Banks was in double figures as well, scoring 10 points. Trenton also got five points each from Hunter Treadwell and Austin Taul, three from Austin Norris and two from Brennon Vandevender.
Both THS teams will be back in action on Thursday as they travel to Marceline for a 6 p.m. tip off.
