Lady Bulldogs
The JV Lady Bulldogs continued a tremendous run as they reeled off their seventh-straight win, keeping their undefeated record intact in the process.
Trenton came out with a very strong press and forced Hamilton into multiple turnovers in the first and second quarters. Trenton was able to convert the turnovers into points on the other end of the floor and quickly built a large lead. By the time the game reached halftime, the Lady Bulldogs had a very comfortable 20-5 lead.
“The girls came out with a lot of energy and intensity and it showed with our 20-5 lead in the first half,” JV girls coach Casey Beavers said.
In the second half, Trenton eased back a bit, but still controlled the pace of the game. Trenton’s lead was shortened a bit, but the Lady Bulldogs were never in danger of losing the advantage. Trenton coasted to the end, picking up the 11-point win in the process.
Leading the way for the Lady Bulldogs was freshman Makaila Capeder, who continued to be brilliant with 15 points. In 10 games at the junior varsity and freshman level, Capeder is averaging 13.3 points per game and the JV and freshman teams are both undefeated in that span.
Behind Capeder, Trenton got seven points from Chandler Wilson, five from Maddie Hooyman, four from Madi Trump, four from Tosha Wilson, three from Megan Derry and two from Hayley Matthews.
Bulldogs
The Trenton JV boys played a solid game on the defensive end of the floor and did just enough on offense to stay ahead of the Hornets all game long. Trenton took a slim 9-6 first quarter lead and pushed the advantage to maintain a 16-12 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs continued to have the upper hand in a close game in the second half, winning by six points in the end.
“It was not our best game of the year, but our defense and good perimeter shooting helped us tremendously,” JV boys Coach Adam Clark said. “Blake Schlarb hit two three’s and Chase (Tolson) hit one. We struggled at times to execute our offense for inside shots. Several players stepped up at different times on defense like (Dalton) Burkeybile, (Chanse) Houghton, (Wilson) Utley and (Freddie) Pannell. It was one of those nights where it took an entire team effort.”
Tolson scored seven points to go with three assists to lead the Bulldogs. Schlarb had six points and Burkeybile had five points. Utley added four points, five rebounds and three steals and Houghton finished with three points and four steals. Charlie Hoffman and Mason Taylor scored two points each and Trenton also got five rebounds from Aaron Delp.
The JV squads will return to the floor next Thursday as they compete in the Gallatin Junior Varsity Tournament. Both the Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs play Hamilton again in the round-robin style tournament. The Lady Bulldogs will tip off at 4:30 p.m. in Gallatin and the boys will follow at 5:45.
