The challenge will get under way on Thursday and Friday, Jan. 6-7 and will end on Monday, March 7. During the eight-week event, participants are encouraged to put an emphasis on wellness and take part in activities designed to improve health while losing unwanted weight.
Participants are asked to sign up at the KCC on either Jan.6 or Jan. 7, at which time each person will have their initial weight recorded. Then, on either Thursday or Friday, participants will return to the KCC to weigh-in and continue that effort weekly through the end of the challenge on March 7. Participants must weigh-in each week in order to be eligible for prizes. All weight information will be kept confidential, however, each person’s weight loss by percentage will be published weekly in the Republican-Times. If no weight is lost, a “-” will appear next to the participant’s name.
Winners will be determined by total percentage of weight lost. There will be both a men’s and women’s category, with cash prizes of $350 for first place, $250 for second place and $150 for third place. Cash is being provided by the health department.
In addition, the top 25 percent of those losing weight will have their name placed in a drawing for one of four prizes, including two one-year subscriptions to the Republican-Times and two one-year memberships to the KCC.
There is no cost to participate in the challenge. Persons must be at least 18 years of age to participate, unless they have a signed parental consent form.
In addition to the weight challenge, the health department is checking last year’s participants to see who has maintained the highest percent of weight lost since the 2010 challenge. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize.
For more information, persons can contact the health department at 359-4196.
