“This was a typical first dual with our kids showing good effort, but looking like we still need to clean up a few things technically,” Trenton Head Coach Bill Hill said. “Our inexperienced kids were understandably a little tentative.”
Trenton took on Mid-Buchanan in their first dual and fell behind early. James Fairchild lost the dual’s first match at 189 pounds, falling by a 10-3 regular decision. Trenton bounced back with a win by fall from Tyler Carpenter at 215, but an open weight at 285 gave the lead back to Mid-Buchanan. From there on, however, the Bulldogs took off, winning the next six weights. Carlos Gonzalez and Lane Beverlin both won by forfeit at 103 and 112, respectively, and Bruce Fair picked up a win by fall at the 1:37 mark in the second period of the 119-pound match. Brandon Dolan scored a win by forefit at 125 and Karson Hill got his first win at 130 via a 9-0 major decision. The Trenton run was capped off by a win by forfeit at 135 by Maria Stevenson.
Following the six-straight wins, Trenton led 40-9. Kody Westcott lost by fall at 140 and the Bulldogs were open at 145, cutting their lead to 40-21.
At 152, Clay Oneal started a run of three-straight wins to close the dual with an 18-4 major decision. Jacob Spillman won by forfeit at 160 and Dakota Galvin scored a win by fall at 171 to give Trenton the win by the final tally of 56-21.
In junior varsity action with Mid-Buchanan, Alex Lovell picked up a win by fall in a 152-pound match.
The Cameron dual went the other way for Trenton as the Bulldogs fell 55-24.
Trenton lost the first match by injury when Carpenter sustained a cut that gave Cameron the quick 6-0 advantage
“Carpenter really showed improvement over last season in winning his first match by fall,” Hill said. “Unfortunately, a cut over his eye caused him to have to injury-default his second match.”
Cameron’s lead increased to 12-0 with the Bulldogs being open at 285, but Trenton got on the board with a win by forfeit from Gonzalez at 103. Beverlin lost by a 20-15 decision at 112, Fair lost by a 14-4 major decision and Dolan lost by fall at 125. Cameron’s lead had grown to 25-6, before Karson Hill picked up a win by fall at 130.
“Karson was solid, winning by a 9-0 major decision and by fall over kids who placed fifth and fourth in last year’s state tournament,” Coach Hill said.
The momentum created by Hill’s win was shortlived, however, as Stevenson lost by fall at 135. Westcott then lost by fall at 140. Trenton was open at 145 and Oneal lost by fall at 152. Cameron’s lead grew to 49-12 with the four wins.
Spillman won by fall at 160, Galvin lost by fall at 171 and Fairchild won by forfeit at 189.
“Spillman did a good job of wearing his opponent down so he could get the opportunity for a fall,” Hill said. “In first-time varsity matches, I was pleased with the efforts of Beverlin, Westcott, Galvin and Fairchild.”
JV action with Cameron saw Aric Helmandollar win a 125-pound match by fall and Alex Lovell (152), Noah Middleton (160) and Leyton harkins (285) all lose by fall.
Trenton hits the mat on Saturday in the Marceline Tournament, which begins at 9 a.m.
