Panthers Win Another Title

The Grundy R-5 junior high basketball teams were in tournament championship action on Friday night in Mercer. The boys team picked up their second tournament championship in as many weeks, topping Newtown-Harris 38-15 in the finals. The Lady Panthers weren’t as lucky as they fell to the host school, Mercer, in the girls championship, 21-14.

Panthers
The Grundy R-5 boys jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter and continued to pull away throughout the game as they cruised to a 23-point, championship-clinching win over the Tigers.
Destin Gann led the way for the Panthers, scoring 10 points to go with nine rebounds and five steals. Clayton Radcliff had 10 points as well and added five assists and six steals. Grundy R-5 also got eight points and five rebounds from Mason Radcliff and eight points from Stuart Eller.
“It was a great defensive effort,” said Panthers’ Coach Les Jackson. “I am proud of the boys.”
The win moved the perfect Panthers to 10-0 on the year.
Lady Panthers
The Grundy R-5 girls found themselves in a defensive struggle in the girls championship. The two teams were tied at 6-6 after the first quarter of play. Grundy edged ahead in the second quarter and led by one single point at halftime, 8-7. Mercer battled back in the second half, taking a 13-10 lead in the third quarter and pulling away with an 8-4 run in the fourth to send the Lady Panthers home with second place.
Kylie Littleton led Grundy R-5 with eight points and Alysa Floyd added six points.
The loss dropped the Lady Panthers to 6-6 on the season.
Next up for the Grundy R-5 junior high teams is a home match-up with Tri-County tonight at home in Galt. Action tips off at 6 o’clock with the girls game and the boys contest will follow.
