Ms. Henry presented a fast-paced and educational program giving some background of jazz and famous jazz musicians, including saxophonist Charlie Parker, who is from Kansas City. Basic concepts of jazz such as call and response, swing, scat and poly rhythms were taught throughout this entertaining presentation.
Ms. Henry also had the students interact with her on scatting, improvisation and rhythms as a group. She even had several students join her in performing, as well as THS teacher Charlie Bacon and TMS teacher Travis Mullenix, who received rousing ovations.
The program was presented through the cooperation of Grundy County Friends of the Arts, Trenton R-9 Schools, Trenton Rotary Club and Missouri Arts Council.
This year’s school programs have been chosen to enhance the Grundy County Museum’s Smithsonian Exhibit, “New Harmonies – Celebrating American Roots Music,” and to further educate the young people in different genres of music.
