One of the most successful girls fall sports seasons in recent history at Trenton High School was celebrated Thursday night at the annual girls sports banquet in the THS commons. Members of the softball, golf, tennis and volleyball teams were honored for their work and achievements from this past season, one that saw Trenton teams find quite a bit of success.
Trenton Celebrates A Successful Girls Fall Sports Season
Softball
For the second year in a row, the Trenton High School softball team brought home a district championship, but they did it without seven starters from last season’s team. A new group of faces rallied around seniors Lindsey Derry and Sam Hudson to push their way into the state playoffs once again.
The softball team finished with a record of 16-7 and had six players selected to the all-district team, including first teamers Derry, Chanel Pash, Maddie Hooyman and Avery Whitaker and second teamers Scotlin Hurley and Hudson. Pash and Derry were first team all-regin players as well and Hooyman was named t teh all-region second team.
Head Coach Steve Richman presented Lindsey Derry with the Bulldog Award for her hard work ethic and commitment.
Other members of the softball team included Madi Trump, Shania Anderson, Katelyn Dillon, Tosha Wilson, Makaila Capeder, Kate Lowrey, Rahel Horner, Brittany Demsich, Katie Halstead, Cassidy Cotton, Josie Frame, Shelby Chaney, Megan Miller and Ashley Holloway. John Cowling was the assistant coach.
Golf
The Trenton Lady Bulldogs girls golf team had another solid year, sending two golfers down to the state tournament and placing second in the Schuyler County and Kirksville tournaments. The Lady Bulldogs had a very strong dual season as well, finishing with a record of 7-1.
Hannah Griffin, Chandler Wilson, Katie Lenhart and Haley Purkapile qualified for the sectional golf tournament at districts and Wilson and Griffin advanced to the state meet in Springfield.
Other girls on the 2010 golf team included Alexandria Bain, Mackenzie Mack, Olivia Helmandollar, Gemma Gray, Breilly Roy, Bekah Wiggins and Juli Henson. The team was coached by Jeremy Austin.
Tennis
The most pleasant surprise of the fall sports season had to be the girls tennis team, which re-wrote the school record book on multiple occasions. Senior Alyssa Dougan won the school’s first district championship in the sport since 2003, winning an individual title in St. Joseph. Dougan also won 110 career matches, a new school record. Dougan also won the singles division of the Benton Tournament, was third at the Chillicothe Quad and fifth at the Cameron Tournament.
As for the team, they finished 14-7 in dual play, setting a new school record for varsity wins in a single season with 14. The team placed second at districts, fourth in the Benton Tournament and won the Trenton Triangular.
Maria Stevenson and Jessica Tracy combined for a third-place showing at districts in the doubles division and the duo also took sixth in the Cameron Tournament. Haley Creason and Jaci Tracy combined to take second in the number-two doubles division at the Benton Tournament. Jessica Tracy and Jaci Tracy combined to take third place in the doubles portion of the Chillicothe Quad.
Other members of the tennis team included Savannah Ortiz, Ashley Gross, Mercedes Williams, Alexis Whitney, Kaylee Lickteig, Ally Foster, Morgan Brown, Magie Steinhoff, Megan Sole, Ebony Meighen, Leah Husong, Siara Bailey, Hannah Brinser, Katelyn Callihan, Jada Cooksey, Megan Derry, Tristan Dugan, Alexis Fender, Caitlyn Harris, Jessica Harrison, Emma Hoyt-Lowrey, Ashley May, Kellie Smith, Bianca Treadwell and Ashley Wilson. The team was coached by head coach Tammy Ockenfels and assistant coach Abby Lovell.
Volleyball
The volleyball team struggled through a 2-23 season, but their second win was a big one as they knocked off East Buchanan in the district tournament. It marked the first time in the history of the program that the Lady Bulldogs had advanced to the district semifinals.
Micah Burkeybile was named to the all-district second team and the Wathena All-Tournament Team and was the team MVP. Burkeybile led the Lady Bulldogs in serving with 38 aces, blocking with 60 blocks, hitting with 67 kills, and defense with 75.2 defensive percentage.
Amber Fischbach was also honored for defense, finishing the season with a 75.1 defensive percentage. Fischbach led the team in setting with 41 assists as well. Fischbach was honored with the team’s hustle award.
Other awards included the most improved players, which went to Kaylie Russell and Haley Mathews, and the outstanding freshmen, which went to Kandis Taylor and Shanna Nichols.
Other players on the team included Kori Grogan, Kate Ewald, Holly Doolin, Gwen Delp, Katie Ireland, Carman Morin. Monica Weaver, Alyssa Schultz, Kaiulani Perez, Kelsey Scott, Tenasha Bonnett, Rebecca bridges, Malinda Foster, Becky Schroeder, Abby Saul and Samantha Shaw. The team was coached by Head Coach Natalie Johnson and Assistant Coach Brett Ewald. Managers for the team were Clorissa Blozvich and Sophia Beaird.
