2010 Missouri Day Festival Under Way

“Paving the Path to the Future,” the theme of the 2010 Missouri Day Festival, was very evident during Thursday night’s opening ceremonies at the Trenton First Baptist Church.

Youth were featured up and down the lineup of the program agenda, beginning with the presentation of the colors by Boy Scout Troops 97 and 99, who were also introduced as grand marshals of the Missouri Day Parade. Troop 99 Scoutmaster Dean Sager presented a history of the Boy Scout organization, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, as well as a history of the program in Trenton.
In addition, members of the Trenton High School show choir, Gold Rush, provided musical entertainment during the program and youth winners of the coloring contest were also recognized, along with winners in the window decorating and yard decorating competitions.
Mayor Cathie Smith served as the master of ceremonies for the event. Special guests were introduced by Band Festival Coordinator Buddy Hannaford and Community Developer Ralph Boots.
Winners in the yard decorating contest were:
Business and organization – 1. Sunnyview Nursing Home, 1311 E. 28th St.; 2. Trenton Master Gardeners sign, Highway 6 & 65; 3. Wright Memorial Hospital Physicians Group, 618 E. First St.
Individual – 1. Marilyn Blakesley, 1920 Pleasant Plain; 2. Sarah DeVorss, 1401 E. 13th, Apt. 5; 3. Lannie Harkins, 300 W. Crowder Road.
Winners in the window decorating contest were:
Business – 1. Lockridge, Constant and Conrad, 801 Main St.; 2. Lucky Dog, 922 Main St.; 3. Preferred Family Health Care, 1628 Oklahoma Ave.
Organization – Preceptor Nu sorority (Citizens Bank, Ninth and Main streets); 2. Oak Leaf Achievers 4-H Club (KTTN, Eighth and Main streets).
Winners in the coloring and drawing contests included:

A pops concert by the Trenton R-9 Vocal Music Department and featuring the THS Concert Choir and seventh and eighth grade choirs was held following the opening ceremonies.
Missouri Day activities get under way with a dance at the North 65 Center this evening, beginning at 7 o’clock. Saturday’s schedule includes a breakfast at the Masonic Hall at 6 a.m., the parade and marching festival at 8:30 a.m., a magic show at the fairgrounds, a petting zoo at the livestock pavillion, skateboarding at Switch Skateboarding and a band competition throughout the day at the THS gym and C.F. Russell Stadium. Sunday’s events include a church service at 9 a.m. at the livestock pavillion, skateboarding, a magic show and the United Way Baby Show at 1 p.m. at the North 65 Center.
Vendors, crafters and flea marketers will be set up throughout the day on both Saturday and Sunday. Concessions will also be offered on both days.
