For the second night in a row, the Lady Bulldogs played up to Coach Natalie Johnson’s standards, but couldn’t pick up a win against a solid squad.
“The varsity had another great night as far as playing well as a team and staying focused,” Johnson said. “Again, the score was pretty lopsided in the first set, but it was a good game. We were playing hard and we volleyed back-and-forth with Lathrop several times; we just weren’t getting the points to fall in our favor.”
Micah Burkeybile had a solid game at the net, tallying four kills and five blocks. Kori Grogan finished with two kills and three blocks and Amber Fischbach had an ace and five assists. Holly Doolin chipped in with an ace and Katie Ireland had a kill.
“Lathrop is an excellent team and we know we are going to have a tough game every time we go up against them,” Johnson said. “I think my girls did a great job playing with them. They have some great, hard hitters who got some very nice kills on us, but we were hitting back tonight and we had several nice kills ourselves. It was great to see our girls playing an aggressive game.”
The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 1-13 on the season.
The junior varsity also fell to Lathrop, 25-13, 25-9.
“We still weren’t playing up to our potential at the JV level,” Johnson said. “We had a closer game in the first set, but we weren’t communicating on the court like we need to in order to play good ball. We just didn’t see the teamwork we like to see out of these girls. They got frustrated easily and that always throws us off and causes us to make mistakes.”
The JV fell to 2-9 on the season with the loss.
Next up for Trenton is tournament action in Wathena, KS this Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs will host St. Joseph Christian on Monday.
