“We played a lot better at the varsity level than I have seen us play for several weeks,” Johnson said. “Even though the score of the first set looks very lopsided, it wasn’t a bad game. Our girls played hard and we had several volleys back-and-forth. We just weren’t able to score on many of them. We played well as a team and the girls did a great job getting after the ball.”
Micah Burkeybile led the Lady Bulldogs with three kills, two blocks and two aces. Kori Grogan added two kills, two assists and a block and Amber Fischbach finished with two assists, a kill and an ace. Trenton also got two aces from Katie Ireland and one ace from Holly Doolin.
“It was great to see these girls playing a better game,” Johnson said. “They were communicating well and working better as a team than they have in a while. They were ready to play when we got there and played with a desire that has been missing for a while. It was good to have them back.”
The loss dropped the varsity to 1-12 on the season.
In junior varsity action, Trenton lost 25-9, 25-11. Kelsey Scott had an ace and Kate Ewald had a block.
“Our JV girls couldn’t quite get together on the court,” Johnson said. “We were having a lot of trouble getting to the ball and we weren’t communicating like we know we should. We didn’t seem to have the desire to play tonight.”
With the loss the JV fell to 2-8 on the year.
In C team action, Trenton lost 25-15, 25-11.
“We got off to a very slow start, letting Chillicothe score six before we stopped them,” Johnson said. “We were having a lot of trouble receiving the ball and gave away a lot of points because we couldn’t get control of the ball. We were down 12-2 before we finally stepped up and started playing. We had a couple of good serving runs by Haley (Mathews) and Kaylie (Russell) and finally made a good showing on the scoreboard.
Mathews had two aces in the game and Russell had one. Trenton also got kills from Kaiulani Perez and Becky Schroeder and assists from Malinda Foster and Tenasha Bonnett.
The loss dropped the C team to 0-5 on the season.
“Chillicothe has a good group of freshmen and they definitely proved it,” Johnson said. “We can’t wait until we are down 10 points to decide to play.”
The Trenton volleyball program will return to the court tonight as they travel to Lathrop to face the Lady Mules. Action will begin at 5 o’clock.
