The Trenton Lady Bulldogs volleyball team was unable to score their first win of the season on Tuesday night as they fell at home to a strong Lafayette team 25-12 and 25-9.
Volleyball Teams Falls To Lafayette
The Lady Bulldogs’ normally solid serving struggled against the Irish and it didn’t take long for the problem to take its toll on Trenton.
“Everyone is going to have an off night and tonight was ours,” Head Coach Natalie Johnson said. “My varsity girls have been on top of our serves every game this year until tonight. I don’t know what happened to our serving, but it was universal. One player having an off night is inconvenient, but when the majority are off, it’s a problem. We gave up several points in the first set and when you continue to do that it’s hard to get ahead.”
Micah Burkeybile led the way with a team-high five kills to go with one block and an assist. Holly Doolin chalked up two aces and a kill and Kori Grogan had a kill and an assist. Amber Fischbach and Tasha Reim each had an assist and Katie Ireland scored a kill.
“Despite the problems we were having, we did have several great volleys,” Johnson said. “We scrambled pretty good throughout both sets, but we just couldn’t keep that momentum going for long. That isn’t like us. We didn’t have the best night, but we are a strong team and the season is far from over. We still have a match and tournament play this week and I hope to end the week better than we started off.”
The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 0-5 on the season.
The junior varsity also lost to Lafayette, falling 25-13 and 25-3. Carmen Morin had a kill, Monica Weaver had an ace and Kate Ewald finished with an assist.
“We beat ourselves on the court during the JV match,” Johnson said. “We started the first set pretty strong, but not long into the game Lafayette had a good run of points and we fell behind. We were far from out of the game, but we lost our confidence and pretty much shut down.”
The JV fell to 1-4 on the season.
The C team dropped their match-up with Lafayette 25-11 and 25-12. Kandis Taylor had a kill to lead the C team statistically. The loss dropped the C team to 0-2 on the season.
Next up for the Trenton volleyball program is a road match-up with Kirksville on Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs’ varsity team will be in tournament action at Lathrop.
