The Trenton High School girls volleyball team was dealt a tough loss to stomach Monday night in Braymer. Some questionable calls didn’t fall the Lady Bulldogs’ way and Braymer picked up a 25-14, 25-21 victory.
Frustrating Loss For V-Ballers
“The varsity had a very frustrating night, but I will hand it to my girls, they kept their cool and tried to play a good game under less than ideal circumstances,” Trenton Head Coach Natalie Johnson said. “When it seems like you are fighting a battle against two opposing teams instead of just one it’s pretty much a losing battle, but we put up a good fight. We played the game the way we know it should be played. We will see Braymer again on Saturday at the Lathrop Tournament and I am very interested to see how that game plays out.”
Trenton was led by Micah Burkeybile, who finished with three kills, two blocks and an ace. Kori Grogan had two blocks and a kill and Amber Fischbach had three assists and an ace. Trenton also got aces from Holly Doolin and Gwen Delp and two blocks from Katie Ireland.
“It was one of those nights you have to look at the way you played the game,” Johnson said. “I hope the girls walked out of there proud of their performance on the court and proud of the fact that they played a good, solid game of volleyball despite the things working against them.”
Trenton fell to 0-4 on the season with the loss.
The junior varsity was also in action on the night, picking up their first win, 20-25, 25-22, 25-20.
“Our JV girls played a very good match,” Johnson said. “We had several serving and digging errors in the first set that gave Braymer the lead and the first set, but we started out the second and third sets stronger, sealing the win for Trenton. After the first set our serving and digging looked a lot better. We had several good serving runs that gave us a jump in points. We stress all the time that serves can win or lose games and tonight is a good example.”
Kate Ewald had a team-high eight aces to go with four kills and two assists. Monica Weaver added five aces and three kills and Carman Morin finished with three aces and two assists. Kelsey Scott served up three aces and Shanna Nichols tallied two kills, an ace and an assist. Trenton also got an ace and a kill from Kandis Taylor, an assist from Delp and one ace each from Ireland and Alyssa Schultz.
The win gave the JV a 1-3 record. Both the JV and varsity will be back in action tonight as they come home to face Lafayette at the THS gym in Trenton. Action begins with the JV match at 5 p.m. and the varsity will follow.
