The Tigers took control of the game with a first-quarter touchdown coming on a quarterback keeper. Tigers’ signal caller Brycen Stark scored from two yards out, giving Princeton an early 7-0 advantage in the Grand River Conference match-up. The Tigers scored twice more in the second quarter, once on a Vance Purdun five-yard run and once on a 30-yard pass from Purdun to Brody Criddlebaugh.
While the Tigers’ offense was working their way out to a 21-point first half, the defense was suffocating the Wolverine’s fast paced Jet Sweep attack.
“We went out and accomplished our objective,” Princeton Head Coach Dave Cavanah said. “We wanted to shut down their speed and their jet sweep attack and we did that. We got solid performances from Vance Purdun, Matt Hydorn, Dakota Thompson and Nate Roberts on the defensive side of the ball. Those guys really gave us good games, along with others. It was a complete team effort.”
Princeton scored two more times in the second half, both coming via Purdun. The all-state back carried the ball in from nine yards out and two yards out to give Princeton the 35-0 edge by which it would eventually win the contest.
Purdun ran for over 100 yards in the game and scored three rushing touchdowns to go with his passing touchdown to Criddlebaugh. Purdun wasn’t alone fueling the offense as a pair of other backs gave him some solid support.
“Tyler Johnson and Brody Criddlebaugh had pretty good games for us on the offensive side of the ball,” Cavanah said. “Tyler had some decent runs and Criddlebaugh had a good run or two and caught a touchdown. It all starts with the offensive line, though, and we got good production from the guys up front. Shadoe Kinnison really stepped up and had a good game up front for us and Jake Letner did a solid job blocking as well.”
The win moved the Tigers to 2-0 both overall and in GRC play.
“I think right now things are moving in the right direction,” Cavanah said. “We still need to get a little bit better, but I think we might be farther along at this point than we have been in years past.”
The Tigers will look to make it three in a row this Friday as they travel to Gallatin for a Grand River Conference match-up with the Bulldogs. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
