The Newtown-Harris softball teams couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the 2010 season than the one they got at home on Thursday night against Cainsville. The Lady Tigers picked up a 17-0 win while the Tigers were victorious 18-0.

Lady Tigers
The Lady Tigers did the bulk of their damage in the first inning, scoring 13 runs in the opening frame. Newtown added four in the second and didn’t bat in the third as the game was called by the 15-run rule.
Emily Wollenzien was swinging a hot bat for the Lady Tigers, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run and four RBIs. On the hill, Mercedes Foster picked up the win, allowing no runs, hits or walks. Foster struck out three in the contest.
The win gave the Lady Tigers a 1-0 record overall and in HDC Conference play.
Tigers
The boys game was the same song, but a different verse. Newtown lit up the scoreboard with 13 runs in the first inning and followed up with five more in the second. The Tigers also didn’t come to the plate in the third as the game was called by the 15-run rule.
Six different Tigers had home runs and four different Tigers drove in three runs. Japheth Busick scored the win on the hill, going three innings without allowing a run, hit or walk. Busick struck out five Redmen.
The Newtown girls will be back on the diamond Saturday as they compete in the Putnam County Junior Varsity Softball Tournament in Unionville. The girls will also be in action Monday against the Lady Knights of North Daviess. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
