A former baseball player with the Milwaukee Brewers, now an author, presented the program at Thursday’s Trenton Rotary Club meeting. Kerry Sampson was the program chairman.

Bill Severns currently is employed by Larkin and Associates, an engineering firm in Kansas City. He spent six years with Milwaukee and was a teammate of Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost, whom he referred to as “his best friend” during their playing days. Severns talked about a book he has written, “Keepers of the Sandlot,” which is directed at adults and reminds parents to “enjoy your children.”
Severns said that there are too many times that parents and/or adults will not let their children be children and that parents need to relax and let their children enjoy their youth. As he quoted a baseball scout that is included in his book, “tell the parents we don’t have time to scout Little League.”
Severns reminded members that when someone is scared, “they can’t do anything,” and that is the same for children who are playing sports. He said to “never be the coach or the person that makes a kid give up the game.”
During the business meeting, Elizabeth Gibson distributed information sheets to be completed for the Rotary Director. The sheets should be returned by Sept. 15. She also passed out tickets for the Sept. 18 fish fry at the Rock Barn. The movie that evening will be “The Spy Next Door,” with Jackie Chan. There will also be musical entertainment and a silent auction, with all proceeds going to the Rotary Foundation.
Next week’s program chairman is L.D. Gibson. Members will meet at the Trenton Masonic Hall basement for lunch, then tour the Grundy County Museum “New Harmonies” exhibit.
