Two days into the 2010 softball season, the Trenton Lady Bulldogs have two wins. Trenton scored its second victory in as many days on Tuesday night as they pounded Carrollton, 8-3.

The win didn’t come without some drama, however. Trenton jumped out to an early lead, but errors allowed Carrollton to stay in the game and after four innings the game was tied at 3-3.
Trenton responded, however, pushing the go-ahead run across the plate in the fifth and then breaking free of the Lady Trojans with four more in the sixth.
“I think we did some things real well, but we also saw some mistakes that we are going to have to make some adjustments on,” Head Coach Steve Richman said. “We can’t make that many errors and continue to win games. I was happy with the response of our bats when it got down to crunch time, though. We have some kids that are really hitting well right now.”
One of those individuals is sophomore Maddie Hooyman. Hooyman was up to her old tricks, going 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and three runs scored. Scotlin Hurley, Avery Whitaker, Kate Lowrey and Cassidy Cotton all had a run scored and an RBI to boot. Chanel Pash drove in a run with a triple and picked up the win on the hill.
Pash threw five innings, allowing five hits and three runs, only one of which was earned. Pash struck out four in the game. Hurley came on in the fifth with the Lady Bulldogs leading 4-3 and picked up a two-inning save. Hurley didn’t allow a run or a hit and struck out three.
“Our pitching is looking really good early on,” Richman said. “Those two girls really pack a nice one-two punch.”
With the win, Trenton improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Trenton junior varsity was unable to follow up with a win as they fell to the Carrollton JV unit 4-2 in five innings. Much like the varsity, errors proved to be an issue. A couple of defensive miscues in the second and third innings cost the Lady Bulldogs three unearned runs, which turned out to be the difference in the ball game.
Makaila Capeder and Mariah Elliott had Trenton’s only two hits and Capeder and Madi Trump scored the two runs put on the board by the Lady Bulldogs. Katie Halstead had an RBI.
Cotton threw two innings and struck out three and Elliott threw the final three innings and struck out two.
“After those early mistakes we really settled down and made some nice defensive plays,” JV Coach John Cowling said. “Both of our pitchers threw very well and it was a well played ball game by both teams.”
The JV moved to 1-1 on the season with the loss.
Both the Trenton varsity and JV return to the diamond on Thursday as they travel to Princeton for match-ups with the Lady Tigers’ program. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m. at the Derry Sports Complex.
