NCMC Students Getting Ready For Start Of School

Students at North Central Missouri College will be returning for the 2010-2011 academic year this weekend when on-campus students begin moving into the dormitories and orientation and campus activities are held.

“Move-In” Day has been designated for Saturday, Aug. 21, with on-campus students moving into their dorm rooms at Selby and Ellsworth halls from 8 a.m. to noon. Mable Street, between 12th Street and Crowder Road will be closed throughout the day to allow not only for the moving process, but for other activities that will be taking place in that area on Saturday.
The book store and the Alexander Student Center offices will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday for students needing to pick up classroom items as well as take care of any last-minute arrangements involving classes, financial aid, etc. Games and activities are planned on the front lawn of the dormitories from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., hosted by the residence hall staff.
Each dormitory will have a residents’ meeting from 2 to 3 p.m. in their respective buildings, with an all-dorm residents’ meeting at 2:30 p.m. in the Ketcham Community Center. A water slide and water games are planned from 3 to 7 p.m. on the dorm lawn, along with a barbecue from 4 to 6 p.m. Students will also get a chance to view an outdoor movie at 9 p.m.
Sunday’s activities include a brunch in the Great Western Dining Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. NCMC students with a proper ID will get to swim for free at the Trenton Family Aquatic Center from 1 to 6 p.m. A “foam” dance party is planned on the dorm lawn from 8 to 11 p.m.
New student orientation is on Monday, with new students meeting in the KCC from 8 to 8:45 a.m., followed by a welcome from NCMC President Dr. Neil Nuttall, a faculty introduction by Dean of Instruction Dr. Jamie Hooyman and the “traditions” speech by Director of Development Steve Maxey.
Students will get a chance to experience campus life up close from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. when sessions are held concerning library services, the ARC/SSS programs, “Blackboard,” the student portal and the student policy handbook. Students will be able to have their questions answered about those topics during that time.
The organization and community fair is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Businesses and organizations from around the community, along with college organization representatives, will be on campus to tell students about the services they offer.
Lunch will be available behind the residences halls, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Non-traditional students will hold a luncheon in the Sugg Room of the KCC. There will be inflatable games on the front lawn of Geyer Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Main Street between 13th Street and Crowder Road will be closed from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to accommodate college activities during that time.
Hypnotist Brian Imbus will be on campus Monday night, giving his “Miracles of the Mind” performance at the KCC. The show, described by NCMC officials as “family friendly,” begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
