Gary Hooyman of Trenton, a pilot for Southwest Airlines, was the guest speaker at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Don Purkapile was the program chairman.
Local Pilot Gives Program
Hooyman talked about the “Miracle on the Hudson,” in which a pilot was able to land his aircraft in the Hudson River with 150 passengers aboard after the plane hit a flock of geese. He told about the flight and what the pilot, Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, had to take into consideration in determining whether or not to ditch the U.S. Airways plane in the water or attempt to make a landing at a nearby airport. The airplane had left LaGuardia Airport in New York City on its way to Charlotte, NC when it lost both engines after hitting the geese. All passengers got out safely.
During the business meeting, President Phil Hoffman said that the final list of committees was being compiled and that the club would be hosting an exchange student from Taiwan this school year. The Joe Brinser, Joe Capeder and Phil Hoffman families have agreed to serve as hosts.
Information is being updated for the membership directory and members are asked to contact Elizabeth Gibson to see if their information is correct. Linda Overton, who is working with the New Harmonies exhibit at the Grundy County Museum, asked if club members would volunteer to assist at the museum while the exhibit was on display.
Next week’s program chairman is Elizabeth Gibson.
