The Court Appointed Special Services (CASA) program, operated by the Third Judicial Circuit Court, was the topic of a program presented at Thursday’s Trenton Rotary Club. Sarah Maloney was the program chairman.
CASA Is Rotary Program Topic
Norma Dougan and Rita Martz of the CASA program, which is based in Trenton, presented information about the services offered by the program to children who have been abused or neglected and are currently in the court system. Mrs. Dougan said that CASA is currently serving 30 children in the four counties it covers – Grundy, Harrison, Daviess and Mercer – but that there are as many as 75 who could be served with more volunteers. There are currently 11 trained volunteers while three more are undergoing training. The volunteers represent the “best interest of the child” while in the court system, helping with decisions such as whether or not a child is able to stay in a family or should be placed in foster care.
During the business meeting, Katherine Hoffman presented a flag from the Brazilian Rotary Club she attended while visiting former Trenton exchange student Isabella Sgarbic. Jeff Crowley was presented with a pin recognition of reaching the second level of the Paul Harris Fellow program. Elizabeth Gibson distributed information for members to review as she is updating the club membership directory.
During the board meeting, it was decided the club would host an exchange student from Taiwan for the next school year. The club will also host the Trenton Quarterback Club tailgate party on Sept. 10.
Next week’s program chairman will be Don Purkapile.
