Mrs. Carman, who also serves as the Trenton Downtown Improvement Association director, talked about the activities that have been held in the Sesquicentennial Park in downtown Trenton, including events planned during the afternoon of July 4. The program begins at 1 p.m. and will include a program of music and storytelling as well as a children’s parade. Members of the VFW Post will present the colors and Dr. Neil Nuttall, president of North Central Missouri College, will have the opening prayer. Tony Ralston, representing area veterans, will lead the pledge to the U.S. flag and give a salute to veterans. Rita Hanes will sing The National Anthem.
The 4 p.m. children’s parade is open to youth ages 10-and-under. While there are no prizes offered, each participant will receive a small gift. The parade starts at 12th and Main and will continue to the intersection of Ninth and Main and circle back to the flag at Five Points. Children are being encouraged to dress in patriotic colors and decorate their mode of transportation as well. No large motorized vehicles will be allowed.
Diane Lowery, who has served as the co-chairman for the fireworks fundraising, said that fireworks will be detonated at dusk at the Lake Trenton area. Lake Trenton will be blocked off at the dam at 7 p.m. to allow personnel to set up for the fireworks show. She encouraged the public to come out and watch the fireworks, noting there were several good areas in which they could be viewed. The city is allowing persons to park at the airport in designated areas and the Green Hills Animal Shelter is inviting persons to park in their lot as well.
John Anthony also talked about the Colgate Country Showdown, which was held at the park in June. An Easter egg hunt was held earlier in the year at the park and a “Night at the Movies,” sponsored by Citizens Bank and Trust, will be held on July 10.
During the business meeting, the program list for the year was distributed. It was announced that dues have been increased for the year to $35 a month to help pay for increased costs related to international dues and expenses involving International President Ray Klinginsmith, who is from District 6040, which is the district in which the Trenton club is located.
Next week’s program chairman is Rick Klinginsmith.
