Trentonettes Capture Title

The Trentonettes 16-and-under softball team got over the hump last weekend as they captured first place in the World Series Tune-Up Tournament at Adair Park in Independence. After a series of runner-up and third-place finishes, the Trentonettes broke through, running a record of 6-0-1 to take home the first-place title in a 21-team field.

Pool play opened the tournament and the Trentonettes tied the Mound City Playmakers in their first game, 2-2. No extra innings are played in pool play. Chanel Pash struck out three in the contest and went 1-for-3 with an RBI at the plate. Lindsey Derry was also 1-for-3 at the plate with a run batted in. Kate Lowrey and Madison Trump each had two hits in the game and Maddie Hooyman, Avery Whitaker, Mariah Elliott and Shelby Chaney each added a hit as well. The hits by Whitaker, Hooyman and Lowrey extended their hitting streaks to a team-high seven games.
Game two was another low-scoring pool play game, with the Trentonettes winning 2-1 over the Olathe, KS Ice. Hooyman got the win, fanning seven, and Derry led the way offensively, going 2-for-2 with a double. Elliott was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Scotlin Hurley and Pash each had one hit to round out the Trentonettes’ total.
Bracket play began and the Trentonettes wasted little time, jumping out of the gates with a 7-0 win over the Warrensburg Fanatics. Hurley was the winning pitcher, striking out seven. Trump led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs and Pash was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Lowrey, Hurley, Derry, Hooyman, Whitaker, Elliott and Chaney all had a lone hit in the game.
Pash was on the hill in the second bracket play game, striking out four while throwing a much-needed shutout. The Trentonettes were able to score one run, which would be enough, as they defeated the NEMO Hot Shots of Vandalia, 1-0. Hurley drove in the lone run, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Derry, Horner, Hooyman, Lowrey, Whitaker and Elliot also had hits in the contest.
The Trentonettes avenged their tie in the opening contest in their next game as they picked up a 5-3 win over the Playmakers. Hurley took the win, striking out six along the way. Hurley also helped her cause at the plate, going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Derry, Pash and Chaney all had one hit and each drove in a run. Horner, Trump, Elliott and Hooyman had one hit each.
The win moved the Trentonettes into a championship series with the Kirksville Kats. The Trentonettes scored a pair of wins over the Kats to knock them out of the double-elimination bracket and clinch the title.
Game one saw the Trentonettes win 6-0 behind Pash’s second shutout of the tournament. Pash fanned five in the game. Hooyman went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and Hurley was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Pash drove in a run as well, going 1-for-3 with a double. Derry was 2-for-3 with a double and Lowrey and Trump had two hits each as well. Whitaker rounded out the Trentonettes’ hit total with a single.
Pash again dominated in the second game, striking out two and putting the Kats away with a 4-1 Trentonettes victory. Whitaker went 2-for-2 and Lowrey was 1-for-2 to lead the offense.
With the tournament-winning run, the Trentonettes moved to 35-13-1 on the season.
