“I think jumping up will help us,” Head Coach Paul Derry said. “Playing against tougher competition will help us and I didn’t see any harm in it because these girls play against 18-year-olds in school ball. It also gives us more points toward our USSSA rankings.”
The Trentonettes opened the tournament with a pair of pool play games. They faced Team Intensity from Blue Springs in game one and fell 5-1. The Trentonettes’ lone RBI came off the bat of Vanessa Lentz. Chanel Pash handled the pitching duties for the Trentonettes, fanning five in the contest.
The Trentonettes picked up a win in their second pool play game, shutting out the Chillicothe Maniacs, 3-0. Aubrey Utley took the hill for the Trentonettes and struck out nine batters. Chanel Pash combined with Utley in the shutout effort and struck out one batter. Offensively, Crystal Pash, Amber Maberry and Emily Anderson each had one hit and an RBI.
The Trentonettes found themselves in a pitching duel in their first bracket game as they faced the Mid-Missouri Ricochet out of Jefferson City. Utley pitched a strong game, whiffing eight Ricochet hitters. Mid-Missouri was able to drive one run in, however, and that was enough to sink the Trentonettes, who could not get a run across the plate in the game and lost, 1-0. Lindsey Derry and Cassandra Darrah had the team’s only two hits.
The Trentonettes earned their first bracket win and scored a little revenge in their second game when they defeated Team Intensity, 9-5.
Anderson had a monster game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI’s. Kylie Russell and Lentz also drove in two runs each and Derry, Darrah and Crystal Pash each drove in a run as well. Darrah was the winning pitcher on the hill and struck out 10 in the game.
The Trentonettes’ tournament came to an end in their third bracket game when they fell 2-1 to the Blue Springs Pirates. Utley had another good pitching performance in spite of the loss, fanning seven Pirates and moving her strikeout total for the tournament to 24.
Derry drove in the team’s lone run and Ewing, Russell and Utley each had hits to lead the team offensively.
The Trentonettes will be back in action this weekend for a tournament at the Tiffany Springs Sports Complex in Kansas City.
